Zero Carbon County & Public Ownership of Utilities
DISINVEST from CARBON FUEL ECONOMY and Take PUBLIC OWNERSHIP over UTILITIES
Greater Rochester can become the first Carbon Neutral (and perhaps Carbon Negative) region in the country by quickly embracing solar and wind energy, and dropping the most dangerous power source provided by the oldest nuclear power plant in the country – Ginna.
Push for a public buyout of RG&E and Iberdrola, creating more jobs locally while delivering cleaner energy to customers at a lower price. Example: Fairport residents pay one-third the price of electricity that the rest of Monroe County does and their source is cleaner hydro power.
Turn the former Irondequoit Mall into a Botanical Garden, creating a tourist destination and a tropical escape from winter for area residents.
Invest in better mass transit and pedal power. Building off the work of Reconnect Rochester, transfer the $13 million Monroe County spends annually on road maintenance to mass transit and multi-modal transportation; more protected bike lanes, a conversion of the old-subway beds into all-season bike tunnels, and tram, train, and trolly investment.
